They 're all secluded in stunning landscape areas that gives a more nature-oriented and genuine feel compared to the larger lodges.

This safari has a route that has been carefully selected to give a little extra. The safari begins in the stunning Lake Manyara which is the densest elephant park in Africa. After Lake Manyara awaits the rainforest in the Serengeti, Ndutu and the Ngorongoro Crater. The week is intense but we have scheduled quiet days with late morning and time to just enjoy the beautiful views, perhaps with a cold beer in hand. The route has been organised to give you a combination of nature and culture. Elements such as hiking in Ikoma adds variety so that you don't get tired of the bumpy jeep ride.

This safari is perfect to combine with a week on one of the paradise islands, Zanzibar or Pemba. Join us on a safari that will give you the chance to see the Big Five and much more in one of the world's most fascinating natural areas.

Travel Currency, It's best to have USD in cash. Visa cards are also good, Mastercards are accepted fairly often but Amex is rarely accepted. Note that in many places in East Africa there is a fee up to 5% on card transactions.

What to bring on your Safari

To make your safari as pleasurable as possible we put together a checklist of things you should consider to include in your luggage.

Soft Luggage; Pack your belongings in soft bags so they easily fit into the limited space in the safari jeep. It is possibly to leave an extra bag in a locked room at the hotel during your safari but note that the domestic flights to Zanzibar only allows one bag per person.

Binoculars; Many animals will be close to the car but it's good to bring a binocular if we happen to see a leopard or rhino in the distance.

Flashlight or headlamp; It gets very dark at night in the African wilderness, so bringing a flashlight or preferably a headlamp is recommended.

Wipes or/and Hand Sanitizer; Useful if you want to clean your hands before a meal. Can also be used to clean any grazes etc

Hiking shoes (low): Hiking shoes are the absolute best to have on your feet whilst on safari, not only for your own comfort but also to protect your feet from any nasties on the ground such as scorpions, sharp rocks or acacia thorns. A lot of camping and hiking stores will recommend Gore-Tex shoes which are waterproof however you will want to make sure that whatever shoes you bring will be breathable as it can get quite hot. The absolute best is if you have comfortable walking shoes that are water resistant.

Sandals or Sneakers. It's nice to have a pair of comfortable well-worn shoes to wear at the lodge in the evening.

Hat or Cap; To protect you head from the sun

Sunglasses; The sun is extremely strong in East Africa so it's important to protect your eyes.

Mosquito repellent

Sunscreen; Bring plenty of sunscreen with a high SPF. If your travelling during the European autumn/winter it's especially important to wear a sunscreen with high SPF in the beginning. Bring as much as you will need since it's difficult to find in East Africa and where it's available it tends to be expensive.

Light Clothes; Bring thin t-shirt and trousers/shorts. Functional materials are more comfortable than cotton. In some areas, such as the Ngorongoro crater you will experience chilly night (especially between May and September), so we recommend you to bring a light jacket or fleece.

Small backpack or bag to carry camera and similar things during the day

IMPORTANT!! Before your trip make sure to visit a vaccination clinic and get the vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis you need!

Weather and Climate

Tanzania is located by the equator so the weather is almost always warm, at lest by western Europeans standards. Tanzania is however a big country with large differences in topography and altitude, resulting in greater climatic change than one might initially think. The costal areas of Tanzania is warm all year around with temperatures varying between 25 and 35 degrees. The hottest period is from December to late February and the coolest months are June and July. Although March and April can feel cooler because of the wet weather

The main rainy season in Tanzania is between March and May where the heavy "long rains" fall, there is also a shorter rainy season around November. However Tanzania is a tropical country and rain can occur at all times of the year. Rain outside the rainy season is normally a short burst that can be quite refreshing on a hot day. Learn more about the weather and climate in Tanzania in our Safari guide Tanzania.
